If you want to play with new races, you'll certainly want "Xbawks Character Extender" (clienside) or something like it so you the new races are available in the the create-a-character starting screen. Mods marked "(clientside)" only affect your experience and don't need to be installed everywhere. Mods that add new content (craftables (weapons, clothes, furniture), biomes, pets, races) need to be installed on every player's game if you play together, else you get weirdness like the "perfectly generic objects". (TODO: what coords to find other people's builds?) Right-click the PDA (tricorder?) to bring up the Frakin' Universe instructions quests. Then explore your lush starter world and you'll find a friendly neckbeard scientist who will give you your first PDA and a teleporter bookmark to a science outpost for Frackin' Universe quests. You'll find some 'FU' books in your ship locker, add them to your codex and read through them to get a crash course in how this game varies from vanilla. To get started, create an entirely new character, run through the tutorial mission, and when you first speak to your shipboard AI it'll ask if you want to do normal predefined ship upgrades or do you want free-form ship construction. It ups the challenge but has a plethora of new content. You can't use characters nor homeships from vanilla Starbound and vice-versa.

This heavily mods the game, changing the planet generator, your homeship, adding many quests and missions and status effects and biomes and crafting stations. Writing these down so I can find them later, or so I can point people at it later.
